This Is Why a Shark-Filled Aquarium in a Shopping Center Is a Bad Idea

"There was no warning. Just a loud crack and it went. I've never been so scared."

As shoppers came and went from a Shanghai shopping center last week, a 33-ton decorative aquarium in the lobby suddenly shattered, sending gallons of water, fish, turtles and three live lemon sharks on top of people who were standing nearby.

As Deadspin points out, the sharks are harmless to humans, so luckily no shoppers needed to be treated for shark bites. However, three sharks died and 15 people were reportedly injured by broken glass.

“There were lots of injuries caused by flying glass, some of them serious because the glass was so thick. We are investigating what caused this,” a police spokesman told the Austrian Times.

"There was no warning. Just a loud crack and it went. I've never been so scared," one worker said.

An official with the shopping center said they are not going to "build an aquarium again in the future."
