American Gun': Murdered Ex-Navy SEAL Was Working on a New Book About U.S. Gun History

"...the American story has been tied to and shaped by the gun."

In the wake of ex-Navy SEAL Chris Kyle's murder, his publisher has announced that the American hero and best-selling author was in the process of writing a second book. The project, entitled, "American Gun: A History of the U.S. in Ten Firearms," provides the nation's history as told through influential and game-changing firearms.

Sharyn Rosenblum, a spokesperson for publisher William Morrow, made the announcement about Kyle's upcoming book on Tuesday. The former sniper was working on the project along with co-author William Doyle. While the Associated Press notes that there was no release date being given for the project, Barnes & Noble lists the book's expected availability date as May 14, 2013; it is already available for pre-order.

Here's a cover image, as shown on the bookseller's web site:

A description of "American Gun: A History of the U.S. in Ten Firearms" reads:

In American Gun, the deadliest sniper in U.S. history tracks down and shoots the most important American firearms, from a flintlock rifle to a Colt revolver to the latest high-tech weapon he used as a SEAL. Chris Kyle uses these guns as a window on United States history, making the sweeping argument that the American story has been tied to and shaped by the gun. In each chapter he offers engaging stories associated with a particular gun, form wars to duels to shoot outs. American Gun is part history, part first-hand journey as Chris locates and shoots these legendary guns.

Kyle's first book, "American Sniper," a bestseller, was written along with Scott McEwen and Jim DeFelice. It was released in Jan. 2012.

As the tragic details surrounding ex-Navy SEAL Chris Kyle emerge, a portrait of the accused, Eddie Ray Routh, showcases a man purportedly suffering from severe mental illness. While many questions remain, the details are continuously becoming clearer.
