Illegal immigrant journalist to testify on Capitol Hill this week

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas outed himself as an illegal immigrant in 2011, yet he's still living freely as an American citizen these days. In fact, Vargas is set to appear on Capitol Hill this week to testify in favor of comprehensive immigration reform.  Vargas will appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee following testimony from Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

In a Twitter exchange last week, Vargas dared authorities to arrest him:

Also appearing to testify Wednesday will be Immigration and Customs Enforcement union boss Chris Crane who has complained in the past of illegal immigrants like Vargas "taking advantage" of the Obama administration's initiatives to allow so-called "dreamers" to stay in the country.

"Prosecutorial discretion for dreamers is solely based on the individual's claims. Our orders are if an alien says they went to high school, then let them go," Crane has said.  "Officers have been told that there is no burden for the alien to prove anything. ... At this point we don't even know why DHS has criteria at all, as there is no requirement or burden to prove anything on the part of the alien.

"We believe that significant numbers of people who are not dreamers are taking advantage of this practice to avoid arrest," he added.

It will be interesting to see these two polarized figures share a microphone at this week's hearing.

Also testifying:

Janet Murguía, President and CEO of the National Council of La Raza

Steve Case, Chairman and CEO of Revolution

Jessica Vaughan, Director of Policy Studies at the Center for Immigration Studies
