Planned Parenthood Leader Condemned Horrific Abortion Allegations Against Gosnell -- But...

Following the horrific details coming from the Dr. Kermit Gosnell trial, many pro-lifers quickly targeted Planned Parenthood and other abortion clinics, wondering when these groups would come out to condemn the doctor's purported actions. Certainly, some of these groups have spoken out in disbelief -- but one response may raise some eyebrows among abortion opponents.

A Christian Post report is claiming that, while the local Pennsylvania Planned Parenthood affiliate has, indeed, condemned Gosnell, one of the organization's leaders said in 2011 that the case does not warrant new governmental regulations that could prevent another similar occurrence. The Post has more:

"Planned Parenthood strongly condemns the alleged actions of Kermit Gosnell, and we would condemn any physician or health-care provider who did not follow the law or recklessly endangered the health of others," stated Dayle Steinberg, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Southeastern Pennsylvania, in an article posted on philly.com.

Planned Parenthood maintains strict policies and procedures to ensure the highest standard of health care, Steinberg claimed. However, she added that no new regulations can stop a physician who has decided to disregard the law.

Restrictions that would further hinder access to safe abortion is not the answer, and will only increase the number of poor women who are forced by circumstances to turn to unsafe options for care, she argued.

According to Steinberg, the procedure is apparently already heavily-restricted and the regulations sometimes push women into waiting longer to have an abortion. Naturally, the longer one waits, the more dangerous pregnancy termination becomes.

"No new regulations can stop a physician who has decided to disregard the law," she wrote in an op-ed at the time. "Restrictions that would further hinder access to safe abortion is not the answer, and will only increase the number of poor women who are forced by circumstances to turn to unsafe options for care."

Certainly, many pro-choice advocates would agree with this assessment. However, considering that Gosnell's clinic was reportedly not investigated or inspected by officials for nearly two decades, one wonders if more regulation, in this respect, would have helped save lives and keep women safer.

The Planned Parenthood leader's comments are being revisited as Gosnell's trial continues.
