Adam Kitzenberg, a resident of Watertown, Massachusetts, was at home on Friday morning when he heard gun shots ringing outside of his apartment building. When he looked out the window, he was in for the shock of his life. What was unfolding below was a violent shootout between police and terror suspects Tamerlan and Dzhok Tsarnaev.

Rather than fleeing away from the window, Kitzenberg ensured his safety and then snapped images of the firefight, later posting them on his blog and distributing them through social media. The dramatic images provide a first-hand account of the incident -- one that that has yet to be so intimately observed and shared.

In an interview with WBZ-TV, he described the experience, noting that, in addition to gunfire, he saw a pressure cooker bomb at the scene.

"From my vantage point, I could see very clearly a small metal device that resembled the pressure cooker bombs from images I’d seen earlier that week," the witness recounted in the interview. "I saw them throwing explosives toward officers down our street."

Below, see just one of the images that was shown on the air this morning. The item circled in red is purportedly the pressure cooker explosive (the same type of bomb was used during last Monday's Boston Marathon attack):

Watch the witness describe the scene, below:

Kitzenberg documents the entire shootout from start to finish, noting that it all began on Friday morning around 12:45 a.m. When he heard loud "pops" outside, the eyewitness wrote, "I had no idea that I was about to become an eye witness to the biggest news story in the country."

Here's how he describes what happened after he realized that a violent clash was unfolding:

When I looked outside my window, I could clearly see two people (the Tsarnaev brothers) taking cover behind an SUV and engaging in gunfire. After witnessing shots being fired I promptly ran up the stairs to my 3rd floor bedroom to distance myself a little further away from the gunfire. As I ran into my room, overwhelmed by shock, adrenaline, and curiosity, I jumped onto my bed to stay below the windows but also have a clear view at the shooters and photograph the event. As soon as I was laying safely on my bed I started taking pictures with my iPhone 5 ... that documented the terrifying shootout with the Tsarnaev brothers, which then led to an overnight citywide manhunt.

Complete with time-stamps, he documented the events, creating a dramatic visual timeline. The series begins with photos of the brothers "taking cover" behind a black Mercedes SUV (presumably the vehicle the two hijacked) as they shot at police.

The photo essay also mentions a "green sedan" that Kitzenberg claims the brothers were driving. This seems to match past descriptions from authorities familiar with the case.

Particularly stunning are the images of what appears to be the aforementioned pressure-cooker bomb, which apparently left marks in the middle of the street after it detonated.

"The use of this explosive created an enormous cloud of smoke that covered the entire street," writes Kitzenberg. "While the street was still cloudy with smoke one of the brothers started running down the street towards the officers, while still engaging them in gunshots."

He continued, noting that the suspect, Tamerlan, was taken down by authorities -- but as he notes, he was unable to tell whether the alleged terrorist was tackled or shot. He continues:

The black SUV proceeded to accelerate towards the officers and drove in between the two cars at the top of the picture. The SUV side swiped both cars taking out doors and windows and ultimately broke through the vehicle barricade and continued driving west on Laurel St. This was the last I saw of the black SUV.

The eyewitness concluded the photo essay by writing that he and his roommates were grateful to have escaped the incident unharmed. He thanked family, friends and others who have reached out to offer support to him in the wake of the attack.

See Kitzenberg's entire photo essay, which documents the events of the shootout through pictures and explanatory text here. Previously, TheBlaze reported that a gunshot had gone through his apartment wall and through one of his roommate's desk chairs during the incident. Read that report here.
