Shawn Custis, 42, was arrested in Manhattan on Friday by the Essex County prosecutor's office and the FBI, according to the Associated Press. He faces charges of attempted murder, robbery, burglary and child endangerment.

According to News 12 New Jersey, Custis has four prior arrests for burglary and was released from prison little more than six months ago.

Shocking hidden camera footage from the attack last Friday showed a man repeatedly kicking and punching the woman and throwing her down a flight of stairs, all while her 3-year-old daughter cowered on the couch. The woman, whose name has been withheld, said later she didn't scream during the attack because if she did, she knew her daughter would scream too.

“I knew that if I started screaming, my daughter would too, and I was afraid she would get hurt,” the woman told News 12. “I took it. I didn’t cry the entire time.”

The station reported she suffered a concussion, bruises, chipped teeth and cuts around her mouth. Her daughter and 1-year-old son who was upstairs were both uninjured.

"We are forever grateful to the incredible team of law enforcement officers for their hard work over the past week. Thanks to these heroes, our family can now begin the next chapter of our healing," the victim's family said in a statement.

Correction: This post stated in error that the woman's daughter and son were injured. They were not.
