Catholic School President Resigns After Revealing Long-Term Gay Relationship

"I need to be truthful about my life."

This week, Bill Hudson, president of Totino-Grace High School, a Catholic school in Fridley, Minnesota, resigned after announcing that he has been in a gay relationship for nearly two decades. After nine years as an official at the school, he is now opening up about his personal life -- and leaving behind a position he loves.

"I love the Totino-Grace community, however I need to be truthful about my life," Hudson announced in a statement. "I am in a committed same-sex relationship, and I felt the best course of action was to inform the school. I value my time at Totino-Grace as one of the most enriching experiences of my career."

The decision to separate from the school, the former school official said, is "heartbreaking and painful."

The same-sex relationship was revealed when Hudson spoke with Mark Motzel and Mary Wilcox, co-presidents of the school's corporate board, the Star Tribune reports. After learning some information that seemed to shed new light in Hudson's background, the two asked the now former president if there was anything he felt they should know.

"We asked him whether there was anything he felt we should know. He informed us that he was in a committed same-sex relationship, "Motzel said in an interview with the outlet. "I will say that we were not aware of this before."

Based on an account of the scenario, Hudson was not asked to step down and officials say that there was no meeting scheduled to discuss his dismissal. That said, Motzel told the Star Tribune that same-sex relationships are not consistent with the Catholic faith, so it's not likely the new information would have allowed official to continue in that role.

Hudson, who served as a vice-president until 2011, when he was made president, is raising two children with his partner. His biography has officially been removed from the school's website.
