Defense Department is very interested in Santa's flight plans for some reason

Via the Wall Street Journal:
Last week came the news that fighter jets from North American Air Command would escort Santa—in part because of the various Air Defense Identification Zones that St. Nick would have to negotiate.And on Sunday, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel weighed in with his two cents on Santa’s Christmas Day plans.
“I hope Santa stops in Afghanistan,” Mr. Hagel told about 150 assembled service members at Camp Leatherneck in southern Afghanistan. “I know you all have been good. And you deserve to have him stop.”
