Pope Leaves Cheeky Voicemail for Nuns When They Didn't Answer Their Phone

Nun's reaction when she learned they missed the call: "wanted to die."

Pope Francis decided to ring a few nuns he knew on New Year's Eve but had to leave a voicemail when they didn't pick up their phone.

According to the BBC, Pope Francis knew a few of the nuns at the Spanish convent from his previous time as archbishop of Buenos Aires. The nuns too had been in Argentina before they moved to Spain.

A recording of the message left by the pope has been circulated by Spanish media. Buzzfeed has both the Spanish audio and a text translation:

What are the nuns doing that they can't answer [the phone]? I am Pope Francis, I wish to greet you in this end of the year, I will see if I can call you later. May God bless you!

Take a listen (note: audio is in Spanish):

What were the nuns doing that caused them to miss the important phone call? According to BBC, they were praying.

Sister Adriana, a Carmelite nun at the Cordoba, Spain, convent, told COPE radio, according to BBC, that when she learned they missed a call from the leader of the Catholic Church she "wanted to die."

"Our friendship goes back 15 years but I never thought the Pope would remember us," she told the radio station.

CNN reported Pope Francis did call back later, and the call was not missed this time.

"The message from Pope Francis was to never lose hope, because sadness leads to spiritual sloth and hopelessness," Sister Adriana said, according to CNN.
