Glenn Beck Has Tense Conversation With a Listener Who Called Him 'Paranoid

"I am paranoid because, Doug, I understand the coming singularity."

Glenn Beck on radio Tuesday had a tense conversation with a listener who called his recent statements on Google and the government "paranoid."

As Beck sees it, the prospect of Google and the government working closely together is alarming at best. The company has unprecedented access to the personal lives of the vast majority of Americans, and its reach continues to expand. It was recently announced that Google is set to purchase Nest, a company that makes smoke alarms and thermostats, for $3.2 billion. Google has also invested heavily in robotics companies, and is reportedly positioning itself to be a contractor for the military.

"What I want the government to do is step away from Google and stop empowering them to be even bigger by bringing them into the military industrial complex," Beck told the caller, identified as Doug from Appleton, Wisc.

"Well, that sounds a little paranoid, Glenn," the caller responded skeptically.

Beck proceeded to ask whether the caller has read a number of books, including The Age of Spiritual Machines, The Singularity Is Near, and Search & Destroy: Why You Can't Trust Google Inc. Though the caller said he had read one of the books, Beck didn't seem convinced.

"You didn't read the book," Beck repeated calmly as the listener spoke about Ray Kurzweil. "You didn't read the book."

"I am paranoid because, Doug, I understand the coming singularity," Beck continued. "I understand Search and Destroy. Read that book. I understand that Google is everywhere in your life, and they have the intent of having access to all information."

By the end of the call, the listener still seemed to be under the assumption that Beck wants the government halt Google's ambitions, or prevent it from expanding.

Beck said that is not at all the case -- he's just alarmed by what "a gigantic corporation" and "a gigantic government" can do if they're "in bed" together.

"They can get as big as they want on their own, no special favors, no special anything," Beck said. "And certainly, not in bed with the Pentagon."
