A Unique Perspective on Addiction That May Help Explain Major Country Star's Relapse

"Relapse is not a failure; it's a reset."

Country singer Trace Adkins has entered alcohol rehab after an alleged altercation with an impersonator whom he had met before in 2007. According to reports, Adkins had been sober for twelve years.

TheBlaze's Laurie Dhue, who has also battled alcoholism, offered her unique perspective on the issue on Wilkow! Thursday.

"Relapse is not a failure; it's a reset," she said. "Relapse is often a part of recovery ...  He had a slip. Doesn't mean he's a failure. Doesn't mean he's a bad guy. It means he's human. Addicts aren't 'bad' people trying to get 'good' ... He is a sick person who is now trying to get well again."

Dhue said that while she hasn't relapsed in the seven years since she became sober, she knows that it could happen "at any time" because "addiction is a very tricky disease" that tells you, "you don't have a disease; you can drink like a normal person."

"The fact that he was able to stay sober for twelve years was an extraordinary achievement," she added.

Speaking about how someone relapses, Dhue said it is likely something that has been "brewing for some time."

"Addiction is a tough thing," she said. "It affects tens of millions of people in this country. There is no cure for it, but there is treatment."

Dhue also applauded Adkins for his decision to go to rehab, and for going public with his decision.

"By sharing, he's helping other people," she remarked.
