Charles Krauthammer Reacts to Obama’s State of the Union: ‘I’d Call It the Chestnut Speech’
January 28, 2014
“There were so many old chestnuts that were shown, it was almost embarrassing.”
Syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer called President Barack Obama’s annual State of the Union address the “chestnut speech” on Tuesday, saying the commander-in-chief trotted out a trove of old and unsuccessful ideas.
“There wasn’t a lot in the speech, of course he’s playing a weak hand,” Krauthammer began. “I was impressed by the fact that he delivered it with conviction because, again, there wasn’t a lot it in.”
“I would call it the chestnut speech,” he added. “There were so many old chestnuts that were shown, it was almost embarrassing.”
Krauthammer said Obama tried to push old ideas that have been unsuccessful in the past for him, including minimum wage increases and extending unemployment benefits.
