‘This Really Pisses Me Off’: Odds Are You’ll Love Jerry Seinfeld’s Response to BuzzFeed’s Racial Question

During a “BuzzFeed Brews” interview on Monday's CBS “This Morning,” comedian Jerry Seinfeld was confronted over the lack of “diversity” among the guests on his “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” web series. More specifically, BuzzFeed editor Peter Lauria asked him why he hosts so many “white males.”

“Yeah, let’s get into that,” Seinfeld replied sarcastically.

“Take a look over here, Peter. What do you see? A lot of whiteys,” the comedian joked, pointing at the live audience. “Oh, this really pisses me off. But go ahead.”

After briefly touching on comments he made about female comedians during an interview with Tina Fey, he explained why he has no interest in race or gender when it comes to comedy.

“People think it’s the census or something, it's gotta represent the actual pie chart of America. Who cares?” Seinfeld said. “Funny is the world I live in. You're funny, I'm interested. You're not funny, I'm not interested.”

"I have no interest in gender or race or anything like that,” he added. "But everyone else is kind of, with their calculating -- is this the exact right mix? I think that's -- to me it's anti-comedy. It's more about PC-nonsense."

Naturally, his response has riled some on the left. For example, the gossip site Gawker claims that Seinfeld is somehow “downplaying the work of everyone from Richard Pryor and Bill Cosby to Aziz Ansari, Mindy Kaling, and Eddie Huan.”

“Yes, comedy should represent the entire pie chart of America, and the glorious, multicolored diversity pie should be thrown directly at Jerry Seinfeld's face,” the author of the post writes.

But it seems clear that Seinfeld was merely saying a comedian should always be judged by the quality of their comedy, not their gender or the color of their skin.
