Former adviser to President Richard M. Nixon, bestselling author,

and political commentator, Patrick J. Buchanan,

signs book deal with Crown Forum

Publication Timed to the 40th Anniversary of President Nixon’s Resignation

"(New York, NY, February 6, 2014)— Former aide and senior adviser to Richard M. Nixon, and bestselling author , Patrick J. Buchanan, has reached agreement with Crown Forum, to write a book about his time working for Nixon as Nixon began his long trek back from defeat to win the Republican nomination in 1968 and the presidency.  THE GREATEST COMEBACK: How Richard Nixon Rose from the Dead to Create America’s New Majority, will be published in print and digital formats on July 8, 2014, and will chronicle Buchanan’s years with Richard Nixon from 1966 through 1968 as an adviser and speechwriter. The deal was announced today by Tina Constable, Senior Vice President, Publisher, Crown Forum.  Roger Scholl, Vice President, Executive Editor, acquired world rights from Fredrica Friedman at Fredrica S. Friedman and Company and will edit the book.

After suffering stinging defeats in the 1960 presidential election against John F. Kennedy, and in the 1962 California gubernatorial election, Richard Nixon faced declarations that his political career was over, an opinion seemingly shared by everyone, himself included in his famous “last press conference.”  Yet, on January 20, 1969, just six years later, Nixon would stand taking the oath of office as the 37th president of the United States, having resurrected his political career and reunited and rebuilt the Republican party and led it to victory after its crushing defeat in 1964.

In THE GREATEST COMEBACK, Buchanan – who, in January 1966, became the first full-time staff member to Nixon and would become a senior adviser in the White House after 1968—will give a first-hand account of those critical years in which Nixon worked to reverse his political fortunes in a decade marked by civil rights protests, social revolution, riots, campus uprisings, the Vietnam War, the rise of a New Left and a New Right, as well as the assassinations of JFK, Robert F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King. Using excerpts from more than 1,000 personal memos between Buchanan and Nixon, Buchanan will show how Nixon pulled together his divided and demoralized Republican party to lead it to victory in 1968. By that fall, not only was the conservative movement that had backed Barry Goldwater behind Nixon, but so was the liberal wing of the party that had fought Goldwater, led by George Romney and Governor Nelson Rockefeller of New York. Also joining that victorious coalition that won Nixon the White House was the newly elected governor of California, Ronald Reagan.

“We’re thrilled to be publishing Patrick Buchanan and are especially excited to share his insider’s account of one of the twentieth century’s most remarkable political stories and victories,” said Constable.  “August 9, 2014, will mark the fortieth  anniversary of Richard M. Nixon’s resignation.  And while there will be many retrospectives on his career, Buchanan had a front-row seat for nine years to Nixon, the man, the politician, and the president.”

“Richard Nixon’s comeback from his defeat by JFK in 1960, and loss to Governor Pat Brown in 1962, is a story of determination, perseverance, and political brilliance almost unseen in U.S. politics,” said Buchanan. “Nixon not only survived and recovered, but went out to revive, unite, and led to victory a Republican party which in 1965 and 1966 had been outnumbered two-to-one in both houses of Congress.  His 1968 victory, which began a string of five Republican triumphs in six straight presidential elections, was little short of miraculous.  How Nixon did it is the story of this book.”

Patrick J. Buchanan, America’s leading populist conservative, was a senior adviser to three American presidents, ran for the Republican nomination in 1992 and 1996, and was the Reform Party’s presidential candidate in 2000. The author of eleven other books, including the bestselling Churchill, Hitler, and “theUnnecessary War,” and six other New York Times bestsellers, Buchanan is a syndicated columnist and was a founding member of three of America’s foremost public affairs television shows: NBC’s The McLaughlin Group and CNN’s The Capitol Gang and Crossfire.
