Company Recalls 12,000 Pairs of Children's Shoes -- but Wait Until You Read Why

Eastman Footwear has recalled more than 12,000 pairs of children’s shoes because the product may be a possible “laceration hazard” to customers. Sounds pretty dangerous, right? Well, read on.

“The metal rivets surrounding the holes where the shoestring is secured on the shoes can have sharp edges, posing a laceration hazard,” the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission explained in a statement.

The shoes are black with gray mesh panels and a green "Coleman" logo name and lantern graphic on the tongue.

The statement describes the area of the “laceration hazard”: “The black shoestrings on the shoes are threaded through green fabric tabs on the top of the shoe. A label located on the inside of tongue of the shoes identifies the style as Runestone.”

Although no child has actually reported cutting himself on the shoe, Eastman did receive one report of an adult “who scratched or cut his finger.”

“No medical attention was required,” the recall notice said, noting the obvious.

“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled shoes and return them to a Big 5 Sporting Goods store for a full refund or contact Eastman Footwear for instructions on returning the shoes for a refund,” the statement added.

The shoes were sold nationally from January 2013 through December 2013. They retailed for approximately $39 per pair.
