The Birthday Surprise Found In a Cake That Left a 96-Year-Old Man Disgusted

"We saw it was coming from the bottom."

The family of a New York man says they found a rat Thursday night in a birthday cake they purchased from a Long Island bakery.

Neil Gold's uncle Joe was celebrating his 96th birthday when he bit into his cake and tasted something unfamiliar.

"He said, 'It doesn't taste right,'" Gold told WABC-TV.

That's when Gold cut open the cake, purchased from King Kullen bakery. He says he observed what appeared to look like a line of black mold.

"We saw it was coming from the bottom. We flipped it over and seemed to be a rat's tail," he said.

King Kullen, however, said in a statement that their bakery has no rodent issues.

"Product has been removed from the bakery and the premises has undergone a thorough inspection," the statement said, according to WABC-TV. "There are no known safety or rodent issues in this bakery."

The family's attorney, Ed Yule, says he thinks someone tampered with the cake and plans to turn over the cake to state officials for testing.

"I personally am of the opinion that this cake was tampered with," Yule told WABC-TV.

According to Gold, his uncle did not become physically sick from eating the cake.
