He Cut a Dead Porcupine Open Looking for a Valuable Mineral Inside, But Found Something Far More Incredible

Jared Buzzell saw a car hit a porcupine on a Maine road and pulled over to check on its health.

Unfortunately, the small animal had succumbed to its injuries and died.

That's when Buzzell decided to cut the porcupine open, having been told by his uncle that a valuable mineral forms inside the animal's stomach, according to WMTW-TV.

He found something far more incredible inside: a baby the mother was carrying.

"[I] cut the sack open and out fell the porcupine, cut the umbilical cord, put it in a hat," Buzzell recounted to WMTW-TV. "We thought it was dead — then I started massaging it and all kinds of stuff starting coming out of its lungs so it started breathing."

Now, the man is taking care of the newborn, feeding the tiny animal baby formula. His wife even wants to keep the porcupine.

"Yeah, not happening," Buzzell said while chuckling.

Instead, the family will eventually turn over the porcupine to a certified wildlife rehabilitator.

According to WMTW-TV, Buzzell acknowledges that his initial motviations for cutting the mother porcupine open sounds bizarre. But he is happy he checked to see if his uncle's story was true, since it saved the animal's life.
