The State Department Spokesperson Just Ignited the Internet With This One Tweet
April 24, 2014
"Is this real life?"
State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki drew controversy Thursday night after she tweeted from her official account that she hoped Russia would "live by the promise of hashtag."
The world stands #UnitedforUkraine. Let’s hope that the #Kremlin & @mfa_russia will live by the promise of hashtag
— Jen Psaki (@statedeptspox) April 24, 2014
"The # symbol, called a hashtag, is used to mark keywords or topics in a tweet," according to the official definition from Twitter.
After Psaki's tweet, individuals turned to the social media platform to mock her.

It's nice to know our state dept uses the same social media tactics as high school age girls.

Something tells me the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia doesn't care about hashtags. @statedeptspox @mfa_russia

Psaki's comment came just before Secretary of State John Kerry delivered a stern set of remarks on the situation in Ukraine, warning Russia that it would be a "grave mistake" not to comply with the de-escalation agreement brokered last week in Geneva.
There was no indication her account was compromised.
