Things Get Emotional for Ex-NFL Player After Surprise Guest Joins Him for On-Air Father's Day Chat

"It's about being there."

Things were pretty much on an even keel for ex-NFL player and now ESPN analyst Mark Schlereth when he answered a question during a broadcast about his memories of "being a dad" — specifically having to catch fastballs from his young son Daniel after grueling football practices.

"It's not quality time," Schlereth said, "it's about quantity. It's about being there."

He recalled that after feeling exceedingly beat up and tired at the end of the day "there'd be a five-gallon bucket sitting in the yard," which meant it was time to catch for his son.

Then suddenly Daniel appeared on a split screen in the middle of the broadcast. "Surprise!" he said, wishing his dad a happy Father's Day.

The surprise quickly got the better of the elder Schlereth, whose eyes welled up as he listened to his son recall his own memories.
