Elderly Couple Being Targeted by City of Houston Because of...Never-Ending Garage Sale

Why is the City of Houston suing to shut down an elderly couple's daily garage sale?

Since 2011, Jorge and Maria Ramos have been holding rummage sales in front of their rented home each day, KROI-FM reported, and the couple apparently have a state permit for the ongoing activity.

Jorge is blind in both eyes, and the couple reportedly said they use the yard sales as a way to supplement Jorge's disability income.

"They barely even make [enough] to pay the bills, the rent, the food and all that,” Robert Ramos, the couple's son, told KROI-FM.

But the City of Houston is suing their landlord in a bid to end the perpetual peddling.

The city told KROI-FM that the couple's constant sales violate a neighborhood deed restriction and that a neighbor had complained, though the radio station noted that daily yard sales are also held at a home near the Ramos' with no reported complaints.

Robert told the radio station he believes his parents are being harassed.

"To tell you the honest truth, yes they are [being harassed]," he said.

But there seems to be little hope for the family flea market, as the Ramos couple said they cannot afford a lawyer and the city said that the state permit that they thought had legitimized their activity will actually be used as evidence against them in court.
