Can You Spot the Major Error in Newspaper's Lead Story on Slain Israeli Soldier?

The New Zealand Herald has apologized to the family of slain New Zealand-born Israeli soldier Staff Sgt. Guy Boyland after the paper accidentally ran a photo of late “Jackass” comedian Ryan Dunn to accompany a story about the soldier’s death.

A giant photo of Dunn appeared next to a front page story headlined, “Kiwi Killed in Gaza.” The error appeared in the New Zealand Herald’s Monday edition, both in print and initially online.

The newspaper claims it mistake occurred after someone pulled the photo from Boyland’s Facebook page but failed to verify the image. Dunn was killed in a 2011 car crash in Pennsylvania.

The Herald reports that Boyland, identified as combat engineer for the Israeli 7th Armoured Brigade, was killed in a gun battle with Hamas terrorists in the southern Gaza Strip.

Later on Monday, the Herald ran a correction and apologized to the Boyland family.

“The New Zealand Herald apologises unreservedly to the family and friends of Guy Boyland following the incorrect use of two images in today’s paper and on the New Zealand Herald website. As Editor I take responsibility for the errors that should never have occurred,” editor Shayne Currie wrote.

"I have personally spoken to members of Guy's family this morning, as has the CEO of APN, Jane Hastings. The family members have been remarkably forgiving, particularly in the circumstances. I have apologised for adding to their grief and I will keep them fully updated on how this happened as obviously it is unacceptable,” the editor added. "We are currently looking into what checks were made regarding the two images, with a view to ensuring procedures are reviewed to ensure that there is no repeat of this error in the future."
