‘Please Pick Me Up. I Want to Die.’ Chilling Words From a 12-Year-Old Who Just Stabbed Another Child.

KENTWOOD, Mich. (TheBlaze/AP) — Glen Stacey remembers the calm of a 12-year-old boy who asked to use his phone Monday evening.

“Hi. I just stabbed somebody. Please pick me up. I want to die. I don’t want to be on this earth anymore. Please pick me up,” Stacy recalled the boy saying to a 911 operator, according to the Grand Rapids Press.

"The only time he raised his voice was when the police came," Stacy said.

The 12-year-old stabbed a 9-year-old boy who later died as a result of his wounds, police said Tuesday.

Michael Verkerke ran home and collapsed on the porch around 6 p.m. Monday after he was stabbed at a mobile home park in Kentwood, near Grand Rapids, according to police. He was rushed to a hospital but later died.

Witnesses told investigators that four children were playing when one of them pulled a knife and stabbed the boy. The motive in the attack was still being investigated, said Kentwood Police Chief Thomas Hillen.

When police arrived, Stacy said, they first went to aid the stabbing victim. When officers started heading toward the playground area, he said the boy on Stacy's lawn wanted police to pick him up and yelled "Hello. I'm right here. You're going the wrong way."

Police said the 12-year-old boy was evaluated at a hospital before being taken to the Kent County Juvenile Detention Center pending charges. Police didn't immediately release additional details about the child. Stacy told the Grand Rapids Press that he heard the boy tell the 911 dispatcher he had "taken many pills" that day.

Even with this violent actions, Stacy said witnessing the boy's confession and seeing him being handcuffed was disheartening.

“To see a kid this young not to feel loved, I’m really saddened,” Stacy told the newspaper. “I hope he gets the help that he needs. This kid is reaching out for help -- I can tell -- but he’s reaching for it in the wrong ways.”

“It devastates me because I used to work with youth, so my heart really goes out to this kid and the victim," Stacy added to WXMI-TV.

An autopsy is planned by the Kent County Medical Examiner's Office. The Kent County prosecutor's office will determine whether the boy will be charged as a juvenile or an adult, Hillen said.
