Should Mom Who Changed 4-Month-Old's Diaper at the Table Have Been Kicked Out of Restaurant?

"How would you feel?"

A Texas mom and her children were kicked out of a suburban Houston restaurant after she changed her 4-month-old baby's diaper at the table. But the mom argues there was no changing table available to her in the bathroom and that she changed the infant discretely.

According to KHOU-TV, Miranda Sowers was asked to leave Brother's Pizza Express with her three children when she chose to change her daughter at the table instead of taking her whole family out to the minivan.

"I thought, 'You know what, I've got my own changing pad, she's tiny, she fits right here on the chair,'" the mother told the news station. "So I laid her down quickly and quietly changed her diaper."

When Sowers' food was ready, it was brought in takeout containers and they were told to leave.

Bessa Lala, who works at the family-owned restaurant, told the news station she saw the public changing as a much bigger deal than the mother did.

"How would you feel?" she asked KHOU. "You're sitting there eating. I don't want to lose all these other customers because they see a dirty diaper."

Donny Lala, Bessa's brother, told the news station said that customers complained about the incident.

"Last thing I want is a customer throwing up," Donny Lala said.

Sowers, feeling that she was wronged for being asked to leave, filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, KHOU reported.

As for the lack of changing tables, the restaurant owners told the news station it is something they have considered installing in the past.

Mom Houston, a blog for the Houston Chronicle, wrote that "there is no excuse for unleashing poop on a room full of people who are eating food." The blogger, however, suggested that when changing tables are not an option, parents could either consider changing the baby on the bathroom counter, if there's enough space, or on the floor if you have a large enough changing pad.

"Your baby will survive," Houston Mom wrote. "If you’re skilled enough, and after three kids you probably are, change the diaper on your lap. Then go enjoy your meal at a table where you and your now-clean baby are still welcome."
