‘200-Year Rain’ Dumps Inches of Water on Detroit, Causes Widespread Flooding: ‘I’ve Never Seen Anything Like This’

A major rainstorm dumped several inches of rain in southeast Michigan Monday, resulting in widespread flooding.

According to the Detroit Free Press, nearly five inches of rain fell on the city, closing roads and overwhelming local authorities.

“We’ve got police, fire, sanitation, DPW, waste treatment — anybody who wants to work overtime, can," Warren Mayor Jim Fouts told the paper. "We’re working round the clock. This is probably a 200-year rain. I’ve never seen anything like this.”

The National Weather Service issued an Areal Flood Advisory for parts of the metro Detroit area and police warned drivers to stay off city freeways, WWJ-TV reported.

“We’re advising everyone, if you see standing water don’t drive through it,” Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw told the local CBS affiliate. “We’re seeing a lot of cars, even at the top side-streets, that are taking some chances and as soon as that exhaust pipe gets under water you’re stuck in there and it may take a while for somebody to come and get you out.”

Stunning images were posted online throughout the night by individuals caught in the storm.

Video and pictures showed massive flooding throughout the area, forcing some cars underwater.
