“I was rather stunned!”

A new video posted online by a woman kayaking in California’s Monterey Bay shows a humpback whale suddenly rise out of the water and nearly “high five” her in the face late last month.

“Humpbacks are graceful and fully aware of their size and of their surroundings, so I wasn't scared (at first) but I was certainly shocked that he chose to swim right up to me,” the woman wrote on YouTube. “He dove under my kayak, which was amazing and exhilarating!”

“But then his back arched and came to the surface about 3 inches from my boat, which freaked me out a bit,” she added.

According to the woman, the whale’s tail ultimately ended up about 12 inches from her face which “made my eyes pop out of my head.”

“[P]ardon my swearing in the video,” she said. “I was rather stunned!”
