Parents Reveal Secret They Had Kept for Years to Boy on His Birthday — and It Was Right In Front of His Face the Whole Time

It was right in front of his face for years — but the 4-year-old had no idea.

When a California mother and father purchased their home two years ago, they kept a secret storage room attached to their son's room a secret.

"The storage room, aka 'The Secret Room' had an old linoleum floor, a light with a switch, some wood paneling and some exposed insulation," his mom Sara Goer wrote on her blog earlier this month.

"At the time it was certainly not fit for the kids to use," she continued. "And we didn't figure a 2-year-old needed an extra room, but we agreed it would make an awesome surprise for The Boy at some point. So the dresser was parked in front of the door and The Boy had no idea for over two years!"

Years later, the parents decided it was time to reveal their tight-lipped secret to their son.

"Sometime after his 3rd birthday we decided that The Secret Room would be his 4th birthday present. This meant getting it fixed up," Goer wrote. "We had our contractor, Steve, come work on it only during the hours that The Boy was at school."

The parents had new drywall and wood laminate flooring installed, in addition to coating everything with fresh paint. A light fixture was also installed.

Goer brought in a table and chairs, hung a world map on the wall and moved in an Ikea box to store the child's dress-up clothes inside.

It was then time for the big reveal.

"There was a treasure hunt around the house with clues on The Boy's birthday morning for him to find his gift," Goer wrote. "His last clue was to push on the dresser to slide it over. He needed a bit of help since it was 'really, really hard.' Then he could see the door. 'What do you see?' I asked. 'That door there,' he declared."

According to Goer, the room "was a hit" and the boy got "very excited" when he realized he had his own treasure room.
