Russia's Food Situation Is So Bad After Authorities Banned U.S. Imports, the Gov't OK'd Eating This Creature

After Western nations (including the U.S.) imposed sanctions against Russia over the violation of Ukraine's sovereignty earlier this year, Russian authorities responded by clamping an embargo on Western food imports — an embargo that reportedly had a brutal impact on Russian food prices.

Now, as the Moscow Times reported Friday, Russia is turning to an unlikely source of protein: crocodiles.

Russia's veterinary and sanitary inspection agency has OK'd a Filipino frozen crocodile meat producer, meaning Russian citizens could soon be dining on the Old World cousin of the American alligator.

Other exotic meats being considered by Russian authorities, the Moscow Times noted, include shark, ostrich, buffalo and kangaroo.
