Thomas Gilbert Sr., 70, was shot in the head, police said. He was the founder and president of Wainscott Capital Partners. His son Thomas Gilbert Jr., fled the scene on foot, the Daily News reported, citing police.

Gilbert and his son were reportedly discussing differences in their relationship but no motive had been determined Sunday evening, an official told the Wall Street Journal.

The son was captured about 10:45 p.m. Sunday after police in riot gear chopped down the door of his ground-floor Chelsea apartment after he had barricaded himself inside for hours, officials told the Daily News.

Gilbert Jr. showed no emotion as police took him in handcuffs to the 17th Precinct for questioning, the Daily News added.

It's unclear if Gilbert's wife was home at the time of the shooting, but a source told the Daily News that she called 911 at 3:31 p.m. after finding her husband in a bedroom. Police told the paper Gilbert was dead at the scene from the single gunshot wound from a Glock 22 .40-caliber handgun, which was recovered by police inside the apartment.

A neighbor told the Daily News that the doorman on duty at the time of the murder told police a man believed to be Gilbert’s son slipped past the front desk moments before the shooting.

“If the doorman had done his job this man would have been alive,” the neighbor told the paper.

The neighbor also told the Daily News he heard the doorman tell detectives he saw a man wearing a hoodie walk into the lobby: “I immediately got a bad vibe. The kid got into the elevator before I got the chance to pick up the telephone,” the doorman said to police, according to the neighbor, the Daily News reported.

“Five minutes later he comes running out covering his face with a hoodie," the neighbor added to the paper.
