Woman Finds Something 'Bloody' in Grocery Freezer — Now Health Officials Are Investigating

"You don’t see chickens with their feathers and blood all over them."

What a California woman found in the freezer section of a supermarket has prompted county health inspectors to review its public health laws.

Christina Dow posted a video to Facebook on Monday after finding seven or eight “freshly slaughtered raccoons” in the meat and fish section of Metro Market in Temple City, California. Dow said in her Facebook post that the creatures were "fully intact and the fur bloody."

“The way it’s packaged in the store, it’s so real, and it’s so fresh, and you don’t see chickens with their feathers and blood all over them, and their expression, with their tongue hanging out," Dow told KCAL."

She then notified the Los Angeles County Public Health Department but a representative there said the store could be within perfectly legal bounds.

Health inspectors, however, removed the dead animals from the store on Tuesday, according to one employee of the store, the Los Angeles Times reported.

In the meantime, the department has launched an investigation.

Under the California Health and Safety Code, raccoons, are considered "game animals," which means they can be sold in groceries but only if they come from an approved source. However, the code prevents game animals from being sold if the Department of Fish and Game considers them endangered or threatened.

Despite the attention they've drawn lately, the store has apparently been selling the raccoons for years without experiencing any issues, according to store employees who spoke with KCAL.
