J.K. Simmons won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance in "Whiplash" and offered heartfelt words in his acceptance speech that could be hard to top Sunday night.
He advised, "Call your mom, call your dad. If you're lucky enough to have a parent alive or two on this planet, call them."

As the crowd began to clap, Simmons raised his voice to clarify: "Don't text, don't email. Call them on the phone! Tell them you love them and thank them and listen to them for as long as they want to talk to you!"
He finished with a simple, "Thank you Mom and Dad."
In "Whiplash" Simmons played a cruel jazz band instructor who berates and humiliates his students, including Miles Teller, who co-stars as an aspiring jazz drummer in Damien Chazelle's film.
It was the first Oscar nomination for Simmons, 60, a longtime character actor. He also won the Golden Globe in January.
