Trey Gowdy to Hillary Clinton: Testify Twice on Benghazi, and Hand Over Your Private Server

House Select Committee on Benghazi Chairman Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) said Tuesday that he will call on former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to testify twice before his committee, after Clinton failed to aswer several outstanding questions about her use of personal email and her reaction to the 2012 attack in Libya.

"The first appearance will be to clear up her role and resolve issues surrounding her exclusive use of personal email to conduct official business," Gowdy said. "This is necessary to establish our Committee has a complete record with respect to Secretary Clinton’s time in office."

"Our committee will then call her to appear before the Committee in a public hearing to answer questions specifically regarding Libya and the Benghazi terrorist attacks that took the lives of our four brave fellow citizens," he added.

Gowdy released a statement just minutes after Clinton argued that she has no further work emails on her private server, and that she didn't save the remaining personal emails that were left. Clinton strongly hinted that she would resist attempts by Republicans to crack open that server and look for other Benghazi-related emails.

But Gowdy said it's not up to her to decide what emails can be seen or not seen, and that she needs to give the server to a third party to make those decisions.

"Without access to Secretary Clinton's personal server, there is no way for the State Department to know it has acquired all documents that should be made public, and given State's delay in disclosing the fact Secretary Clinton exclusively used personal email to conduct State business, there is no way to accept State's or Secretary Clinton's certification she has turned over all documents that rightfully belong to the American people," Gowdy said.

"That is why I see no choice but for Secretary Clinton to turn her server over to a neutral, detached third-party arbiter who can determine which documents should be public and which should remain private," he said. "Secretary Clinton alone created this predicament, but she alone does not get to determine its outcome."

Gowdy's comments were backed up by a spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner, who said Clinton only released any of her emails because of the work Gowdy's committee has done. But spokesman Michael Steel said Clinton still left outstanding questions.

"Secretary Clinton didn't hand over her emails out of the goodness of her heart – she was forced to by smart, determined, and effective oversight by the House Select Committee on Benghazi," Steel said. "Her press conference raised more questions than it answered, and the American people deserve the truth."

While Gowdy's comments indicate he will keep pressing for information about Clinton's emails, his subpoena against Clinton could turn up very little. Clinton indicated she didn't save any of the remaining personal emails, which means even if the subpoena gets Gowdy access to the server, there may not be anything left on it.
