As Lafayette Movie Theater Shooting News Unfolded, a BuzzFeed Editor Tweeted This
July 23, 2015
"I was being reactive."
A BuzzFeed News editor called for individuals to "push for gun control" as news of a deadly shooting at a Lafayette, Louisiana, movie theater unfolded Thursday night.
"Don't pray. Push for gun control," news editor Rachel Zarrell tweeted.
Police said that at least three were dead, including the shooter, after a gunman opened fire at the Grand Theatre in Lafayette. Seven more were injured, authorities said.
When an individual suggested that Zarrell first give the victims and their families "a brief moment of respect," she responded.
"If this were someone in my family id want every person alive screaming about gun control to anyone who would listen," she tweeted.
She later told the same person that "without agenda there would be more tragedy."
Only after an individual tweeted at BuzzFeed editor-in-chief Ben Smith asking him to comment, Zarrell apologized.
"[Y]ou're right, it was the wrong thing to say. I was being reactive. I don't speak for my colleagues," she wrote.
.@redsteeze @BuzzFeedBen you're right, it was the wrong thing to say. I was being reactive. I don't speak for my colleagues.
