Islamic State Suspected of Using Chemical Weapons, U.S. Officials Tell The Wall Street Journal

“We have credible information..."

The U.S. believes the Islamic State recently used chemical weapons on Kurdish forces in Iraq, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday, citing senior U.S. officials.

Officials told the Journal that it's likely the terror group used a mustard agent this week.

“We have credible information that the agent used in the attack was mustard,” a senior U.S. official told the newspaper.

A Pentagon spokesperson refused to confirm the report to TheBlaze, only saying that officials are "looking into this."

It was not clear where the Islamic State would obtain a chemical weapon, but officials suspect it could have come from Syria.

"That makes the most sense," a senior U.S. official told the Journal.

The Assad regime claimed in 2013 that it had destroyed its stockpiles of mustard gas, but inspectors have cast doubt on such claims.
