Watch: Police Rush to Dramatically Rescue Passenger Trapped Inside Burning Vehicle

"It was an intense fire, the heat was just overwhelming."

With firefighters still on the way, Prince George's County police didn't hesitate to rush toward a burning vehicle that had an injured passenger trapped inside.

Police and firefighters were alerted to the car accident which left a man trapped inside of a burning car at 12:30 a.m. Friday in Suitland, Maryland, according to WRC-TV. As seen in a dashboard camera, as a fire engulfed a vehicle, two police officers ran toward the flames, and Officer Nicholas Clayton pried open the car's door with his baton to get to the passenger.

"It was an intense fire, the heat was just overwhelming," Clayton told WRC. "The tires were popping. Explosions were going off in the car."

According to WUSA9, several police officers worked together to try to extract the passenger but were often hindered by the intense flames and explosions from the tires.

Officer Michael Morris was the first officer who rushed toward the blaze.

"Watching my fellow officers go up and bust windows out and try to save this guy's life, it was remarkable," he told WRC.

"I believe if it wasn't for me and my fellow officers, there's a good chance that he probably wouldn't have survived," Officer Jeremy Burch said.

Volunteer firefighters arrived on the scene soon after and helped to extract the passenger from the burning vehicle. The unidentified passenger was taken to a burn unit. He reportedly suffered severe burns from the blaze but is expected to live.

Volunteer Firefighter Daniel Collins, a member of the Morningside Volunteer Fire Department, was the one who reached into the car to grab the passenger as other firefighters quickly rushed to put out the fire.

"Congratulations on a job well done to the police officers, firefighters and medics that worked quickly and cohesively, without regard for their own personal safety, to rescue the victim and save his life," the fire department spokesman told WRC. "Job well done."

The cause of the accident and the fire was not immediately known. A spokesperson for Prince George's County Police Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment from TheBlaze.

"It was a very intense situation. I'm just glad everyone turned out alright," Morris told WUSA9.
