Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich on Friday shared a short list of lawmakers who he believes will be among those considered to replace John Boehner as speaker of the U.S. House.
“Clearly, I think, Kevin McCarthy is the most likely next speaker because he is majority leader, he is very widely popular, he is a very smart guy,” Gingrich said.
Gingrich also said Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) would be a very “formidable” choice if he decided to run. However, Ryan announced earlier on Friday he does not want Boehner’s gavel.
He went on to list Reps. Tom Price (R-Ga.), Steve Scalise (R-La.) and Pete Sessions (R-Texas) as possible choices.
Scalise is expected to run for House speaker, sourced told the Times-Picayune.
