Estonian President Says He's Confident NATO, U.S. Will Defend Country If Putin Attacks

Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves on Monday said that if Russia were to attack his country, he feels confident the United States and NATO would come to their defense.

"I am really not worried about NATO not doing what it needs to do," Ilves said, in response to a question from TheBlaze. "As soon as NATO fails, NATO's over."

Ilves, whose country shares a border with Russia, suggested earlier in his presentation at New York University in New York City that he has watched Russian President Vladmir Putin's military incursions into Ukraine and the Crimea with concern. But Ilves said he does not see a Russian attack on his country as a likely scenario.

"I don't really anticipate anything like that right now," he said.

Ilves was in New York City to attend the United Nation's General Assembly where the crisis over Russia's perceived aggression is likely at the top of his agenda. Ilves as well as two other presidents from the Baltic states were scheduled to address the General Assembly later on Tuesday.
