Blood Everywhere': Gunman Dead After Opening Fire on Australian Police Headquarters, Killing Employee on His Way Home From Work

Terrorism hasn't been ruled out as a motive.

Police in Sydney, Australia killed a gunman Friday who fatally shot a police employee leaving work for the day and then opened fire on headquarters.

The gunman, reportedly clad in black, approached the Parramatta-based building and fatally shot the IT worker at "point-blank range," according to Sky News.

He then shot at special constables inside the police headquarters, three of whom came outside and were joined by police officers who fired back at the gunman and killed him, NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said.

A police source noted increased "chatter" over the last week regarding threats against the Parramatta headquarters — which houses squads dealing with homicide, drugs, gangs and Middle Eastern organized crime — and that officers were ordered to wear their guns at all times, even at their desks.

Terrorism hasn't been ruled out as a motive, Scipione said, adding that the officers "exhibited enormous bravery."

He said learning of the murdered IT worker was a "terrible feeling."

"This man was simply leaving work this afternoon," Scipione said. "He was gunned down. He was murdered on this very street."

Scipione told 9News Sydney he's certain the IT worker was "targeted," but wouldn't disclose details about why.

A real estate agent told Sky News he heard gunshots and saw the suspect dressed in black and waving a gun outside the police building, after which he and his staff ran into their office.

"We looked out the window, saw security guards and what appeared to be a plainclothes police officer with gun drawn and pointing at the person that was now lying on the floor surrounded by a pool of blood."

A witness told a radio station there was "blood everywhere."
