No. 1 UFC MMA Middleweight Fighter Tests His Roundhouse Kick on the New iPhone

"The new iPhone's glass is tougher, but not that tough."

Every time new iPhones are unveiled, people come up with novel ways to destroy the new devices in the name of seeing how much of a beating they can withstand.

The recent release of the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, which began shipping last week, was no different.

This time SquareTrade, an electronics warranty company, had MMA fighter Luke Rockhold, ranked as the No.1 middleweight contender in the UFC, to try his moves on the old iPhone 6 and 6S and the new renditions as well.

So some unlucky person knelt on the ground while precariously holding one of the phones with the very tips of his fingers as Rockhold performed his roundhouse kick on the device. Lucky for this person though, Rockhold was pretty precise in his kick and only hit the phone.

While Rockhold's kick sent the phones flying, it's unclear what damaged them more — the kick itself or slamming into a wall and then the ground at high speeds.

"The iPhone's new glass is tougher," Rockhouse said in the video after delivering the beating. "But not that tough."

Kicking isn't all Rockhouse subjected the phones to. He used the brute strength of his hands in a bend test as well.

He also demonstrated how he could break them with his bare hands. (Image source: YouTube)

In its more serious testing of the iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus and Samsung Galaxy Note5, which included dropping, dunking, bending and more, SquareTrade found that while the 6S Plus did hold up better than the rest (it has 7000 series aluminum), neither it nor any of the others tested survived the "face down drop test."

"While Apple touts the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus as the most advanced iPhones ever, we still found them at the mercy of the most common of all problems — the accidental drop on a hard surface," Jessica Hoffman, SquareTrade's vice president of global communications, said in a statement. "On the flip side, both manufacturers have responded to bendgate with significant improvements on the three phones we tested. This is great news for consumers."

In its testing, SquareTrade found the iPhones could withstand up to 180 pounds of pressure, while the Note5 could stand 170 pounds.

Apple said it sold more than 13 million iPhone 6s and 6s Plus phones in the three days after its iPhone launch, topping last year's early sales mark. The company sold 10 million IPhone 6 and 6 Plus models during their first weekend last year. This year's results include sales in China which was included in the initial launch for the first time.
