NBC Reporter: Benghazi Committee Could 'Fall Into a Trap' If They Don't Focus on the Subject for Which Hillary Has 'No Good Answers

“But if they focus on emails, if they focus on just the Benghazi attacks itself, that’s where Republicans could fall into a trap and where Clinton could feel comfortable.”

NBC’s Chuck Todd said Republicans on the House Benghazi Committee could “fall into a trap” during Thursday’s highly anticipated hearing if they don’t grill former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on the one subject for which she has “no good answers.”

“If it’s about Libya, and the decision to go into Libya — that’s where she has no good answers,” Todd said. “But if they focus on emails, if they focus on just the Benghazi attacks itself, that’s where Republicans could fall into a trap and where Clinton could feel comfortable.”

Clinton's State Department was strongly criticized after it was revealed that U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens requested increased security before the Benghazi attacks. Stevens and three other Americans were killed in the attacks.

"Overall security conditions continue to be unpredictable, with large numbers of armed groups and individuals not under control of the central government, and frequent clashes in Tripoli and other major population centers," Stevens reported in a July 9, 2012 cable.

Clinton will testify before the Benghazi Committee on Thursday for the first time since the Sept. 11, 2012, tragedy in Libya.

The committee and its chairman, Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) have faced increased scrutiny in the lead up to Clinton’s scheduled appearance. Gowdy recent said time of the “uptick” in attacks on him and the committee is “not lost” on him.
