The Galveston County sheriff's office said the bus was coming from an alternative education program in Texas City on Monday when the girl got into an altercation with another student. That's when the bus driver separated the two – one in the front of the bus and one in the back.

Police said the girl purposefully hit the emergency exit button at the back of the bus and jumped out as it was traveling on the freeway at about 55 mph.

"The back door of the bus opened, and then the alarm sounded, which made several of the kids focus their attention toward the back door," Galveston County Sheriff Henry Trochesset told KHOU-TV. "They witnessed this 13-year-old young lady jump onto the freeway."

The girl was not struck by any other vehicles, KTRK-TV reported. She was taken to the hospital and listed in critical condition. She died Wednesday, according to the medical examiner's office.
