Toddler With Amputated Arm Adopts Three-Legged Kitten

Two-year-old Scarlette Tipton knows what it’s like being different. Born with a rare form of cancer, Scarlette was just 10 months old when she had to have her left arm surgically removed.

Wednesday afternoon, Scarlette’s family adopted a little kitten who is also a little different. The kitten, Holly, lost one of her front legs after a traumatic injury.

Scarlette’s parents, Matt and Simone Tipton of Orange County, California, hand-selected Holly because she was an amputee, KNBC-TV reported.

When Scarlette, who is now cancer-free, first met 3-month-old Holly, she looked at her mom and said, “Owie,” pointing to the place where the kitten’s front leg used to be.

"Yes, an owie. Just like you. But she's OK -- just like you are, too," her mother said.

Holly was found bleeding next to some shrubbery in Perris, California, Dec. 17. The two women who found her rushed her to the county’s San Jacinto Valley Animal Campus. It is not clear what caused the injury, but the agency said it is possible that Holly could have gotten caught while cuddling up in the fan belt of a car engine, as many strays commonly do on cold nights.

The Tiptons learned about Holly when her rescue was featured in several news articles last week. The family quickly went to meet Holly and scheduled the adoption for as soon as she was recovered from her surgery

"A special-needs, super survivor kitten is getting adopted today by a family that knows all about survival," Riverside County Animal Services said.
