Golden Globes Host Ricky Gervais and Mel Gibson Share Night's Most Awkward On-Stage Moment — One of Them Even Gets Bleeped

"I want to say something nice about Mel before he comes out."

With British comedian Ricky Gervias' penchant for crude jokes, his introduction of Mel Gibson was sure to be awkward for all — and he didn't disappoint.

A glass of beer in his right hand, Gervais said he "found himself in the awkward position" of having to introduce the venerable actor who he had been the butt of his jokes a few years prior, following Gibson's notorious arrest. Gibson was arrested for driving under the influence in 2006 — during which he shouted slurs about Jews, including blaming them for the wars in the world.

"Listen, I'm sure it's embarrassing for both of us, and I blame NBC for this terrible situation," Gervais said. "Mel blames — we know who Mel blames."

"I want to say something nice about Mel before he comes out," the comedian continued in his introduction. "I would rather have a drink with him in his hotel room tonight than with Bill Cosby."

To his credit, Gibson walked out on stage with a smile on his face as he embraced Gervais to a warm applause from the audience. He quipped that he liked to see Gervais "once every three years" as it reminds him "to get a colonoscopy."

Gervais then walked back onstage to ask Gibson a question, but the network bleeped his entire sentence.

It did leave some in the audience looking like:
