Beloved 90-Year-Old Hollywood Legend Stumps for Sanders 'Because I Like to Help Aspiring Young People...Like Bernie
February 20, 2016
"We've got a choice between a short Jew and a lady."
This week 90-year-old showbiz legend Dick Van Dyke jumped into the 2016 election, stumping for an "aspiring, young" candidate.
He was talking about Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.
It's been 48 years since Van Dyke used his celebrity status to try and help a presidential candidate — that was back in 1968, when he supported Democrat Eugene McCarthy.
What brought the California-based showman to the Sanders campaign?
Reportedly, a phone call from the candidate made the difference. The four-time Emmy winning actor told the Reno Gazette-Journal, “He’d heard me speak about him and called me up and said, ‘Get over here.’”
After hosting an event for Sanders on Thursday night, Van Dyke stopped by a Las Vegas television station to share his thoughts on his choice to lead the Democratics into the 2016 general election.
The short video closes with a curious comment from Van Dyke. While talking about "casting" a president, he said, "We've got a choice between a short Jew and a lady."
