Why Clinton Won't Meet With Chicago Mayor One Day Before Illinois Primary

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has decided she won’t meet with embattled Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel during her visit to the city Monday, Bloomberg reported.

Vermont Sen. and fellow Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders attacked Emanuel via Twitter over the weekend, rebuking Clinton for not denouncing the mayor’s endorsement in light of Emmanuel’s “disastrous record.”

Clinton is not expected to meet with Emanuel, a former Clinton and Obama White House aide, just one day before the Illinois primary, Emanuel’s office relayed to Bloomberg Monday.

A spokesman for the mayor told Bloomberg that "their respective schedules [won't] make it possible" to meet, but "the mayor's support for President Clinton and Secretary Clinton is well known.”

The outlet noted that while the former secretary of state won't be meeting with Emanuel, her husband Bill Clinton spent time with him last week during his visit to Chicago, and Clinton's campaign chairman has regular contact with the mayor.

Emanuel has become a controversial subject in light of a civil rights investigation into the Chicago Police Department that started after a series of police-involved shootings.

Many African-American activists like those involved in the Black Lives Matter movement called on Emanuel to resign after an alleged cover-up of the video showing the October 2014 shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. Clinton has remarked that this decision is in the city’s hands.

"Mayor Emanuel has said that he is committed to complete and total reform, and I think that he should be held to that standard," Clinton said in on NBC's "Meet the Press" in January.

Illinois is among the five states that will host primaries Tuesday. Polling released Monday indicated that the Democratic race is a toss-up in three states: Illinois, Missouri and Ohio.
