Israel is planning to raise the height of the fence along its southern border with Egypt following an increase in illegal incursions into the country by African migrants, the Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz reported.
Defense officials told the Israeli paper that because some asylum seekers have used ladders to climb over the existing fence, the plan was to raise the fence by one meter — or three feet — “over dozens of kilometers.”
The taller fence would stand at 20 feet in height.

Ha’aretz, quoting Israel Defense Forces figures, reported that the fence has largely been a huge success as seen in illegal crossing figures.
In 2010, 12,000 migrants crossed illegally into Israel over the southern border. That figure dropped to 14 during 2014 after the barrier was constructed.
Over the past year, 200 migrants crossed into Israel, some of them using ladders to get them over the fence, Ha’aretz reported.
