U.S. Carries Out Airstrike Against Al Qaeda in Arabian Peninsula: 'This Strike Deals a Blow

The U.S. carried out an airstrike Tuesday against an Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula training camp in Yemen, the Pentagon announced.

Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said in an evening statement that the camp, used by approximately 70 terrorists, was located in the mountains.

The strike was thought to have been a success.

"We continue to assess the results of the operation, but our initial assessment is that dozens of AQAP fighters have been removed from the battlefield," Cook said. "This strike deals a blow to AQAP's ability to use Yemen as a base for attacks that threaten U.S. persons, and it demonstrates our commitment to defeating al-Qa'ida and denying it safe haven."
