Milwaukee Officer Shot in 'Vicious' Attack While He Sat Inside Patrol Car

A Milwaukee police officer was shot early Sunday in a "vicious" attack, officials told WISN-TV. The officer was sitting in his squad car while fellow officers investigated a domestic disturbance call.

Police identified the suspect, who was found dead in a nearby yard, as a 20-year-old West Allis man with two felonies on his record.

The domestic disturbance call that led officers to the scene where the shooting took place came at around 2 a.m., WISN reported.

While officials investigated, someone fired shots into the squad car where the officer was waiting, striking him "multiple" times," Asst. Police Chief William Jessup said at a press conference Sunday.

The officer, a 31-year-old man with 13 years of experience, was transported to an area hospital and is expected to make a full recorvery, Milwaukee police Sergeant Tim Gauerke told WISN.

"This is just another example of the risks our officers take each and every day to protect these citizens," Jessup said.

While investigating the shooting, officers heard gunshots, which led them to discover the body of suspect in a nearby yard, Jessup said. The young man is believed to be the same person responsible for the domestic incident and the shooting of the police officer, Jessup added.

He said the man's death appeared to be a suicide.

Neighbor Katie Kelski told WISN she heard the two gunshots was shocked that such a violent scene had erupted near her home.

"This neighborhood — stuff like this doesn't happen. We live in a pretty safe neighborhood. So for something like this to happen — it's bad. It's terrible," she said.

The investigation into both the domestic dispute and the shooting of the officer is ongoing. Jessup could not provide any immediate information about possible video evidence from the squad car's dash cam or the officer's body camera.
