The California billionaire who has been running a television campaign to impeach President Trump is under fire for his latest ad for politicizing Mother's day.
Here's the controversial television ad:
In the ad, a mother recalls her son's slow descent from becoming a Republican, to a Trump fan, and into supporting right-wing causes until he ends up marching next to alt-right and neo-Nazis in Charlottesville.
"Only a mother can catch the signs early. This Mother's Day, talk to your child about the GOP. I wish I had," she laments while taking a swig of wine.
The video ends with the on screen text, "talk to your child about the GOP. Vote them out."
Here's the reaction
The controversial ad that appears to equate any involvement with the Republican party as the same as marching with racist neo-Nazis was slammed by even those on the left.
Former Obama speechwriter Jon Lovett excoriated Steyer for the ad.
Hey, @TomSteyer. The ads are counterproductive and annoying, you're not helping anyone but yourself (maybe), and yo… https://t.co/lLGgep1kSX— Jon Lovett (@Jon Lovett) 1526070591.0
"The ads are counterproductive and annoying," Lovett tweeted, "you're not helping anyone but yourself (maybe), and you're wasting money that could really help when we're in the fight for our political lives."
Steyer has funded many other ads in an attempt to persuade Americans that the president needs to be impeached. A poll in January showed that 51 percent of Americans did not want the Democrats to impeach the president if they regained the House of Representatives after the midterm election.
We’re not pushing for impeachment because we disagree with his policies (although I disagree with every single one)… https://t.co/JaVFyvSceq— Tom Steyer (@Tom Steyer) 1523501760.0
