Trump reveals some big decisions about who he will put on the Supreme Court

President Donald Trump made important announcements Friday about his upcoming nomination to the Supreme Court to replace the retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy.

The candidates have been narrowed down

The president revealed some important decisions have been made about his forthcoming nomination to the highest court when he spoke to reporters on Air Force One Friday. He said that he would be interviewing possible nominees over the weekend.

Trump indicated that he would stick to a list of possible nominations that was drawn up before the election and includes many conservative and originalist jurists.

"I've got it narrowed to about five," he said.

Two women are on the short list

The president said that the five possible nominees included two women.

Many believe one female candidate could be U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit Judge Amy Coney Barrett. Barrett clerked for Antonin Scalia, the deceased Supreme Court justice.

No litmus test on abortion

Trump said that he would not be asking candidates for nomination if they would side against Roe vs. Wade, the controversial case that established abortion as a right in the U.S.

"I'm not going to ask them that question," Trump said.

Trump has said in the past that he would pick Supreme Court justices that would overturn Roe vs. Wade. Democrats have been trying to argue that the controversial case is the established law of the land and should not be overturned.

Trump gives himself a deadline

Trump also indicated that he would make the nomination by July 9, just over a week from his announcement on Air Force One.

Here's the Fox News video about Trump's pronouncements:

Democrats have expressed anger and frustration over the machinations of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) that has left them with little power to stop Trump from changing the character of the highest court for decades to come.
