Homeless 74-year-old arrested for robbing a bank after he demanded money from the teller

A Mobile, Alabama, man was arrested and charged with robbing a bank, as well as possession of drug paraphernalia, according to Fox10 News.

The 74-year-old suspect, Herbert Smith, was arrested shortly after robbing a Commonwealth National Bank and was later found to be homeless. The man had a warrant for his arrest in Ohio for robbing a bank as well, according to court documents.

Around 3:30 p.m., officers responded to the bank after a man reportedly entered and demanded money from the bank teller. The teller complied and gave money to the man, who then ran away.

It took just two hours after the robbery for police to find the suspect and the money. They arrested Smith and charged him with first-degree robbery and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Smith denied the charges in an interview with a local reporter.

"Did you rob the bank?" asked Fox10's Lacey Beasley.

"No ma'am, I didn't," Smith responded.

"Do they have the wrong person?" the reported continued.

"Yes ma'am, they do," Smith said.

Jail records showed that this was Smith's first time going to jail.

Smith is at least the second senior in just a few months to be accused of bank robbery. In early April, 2023, a 78-year-old Missouri woman was arrested for allegedly trying to steal money from a bank for the third time in her life and the second time in the last three years.

The woman allegedly handed a note to bank employees demanding money, the same tactic she used during her robbery in 2020, for which she was convicted. The woman was also convicted of a bank robbery in California in 1978, when she would have been approximately 33 years old.

Another senior was accused of a different theft in April 2023: a 75-year-old alleged pickpocket at a New York City grocery store.

The elderly woman was arrested after she was caught on camera allegedly pickpocketing a patron. The woman was charged with grand larceny in the fourth degree. She was arrested for the same crime in 2000 and 2001.
